If you are confused about the barbed wire reference, modern barb wire as we know it today was first developed by a farmer and a hardware distributor after being inspired by a display at the DeKalb County fair in 1873.
Every year in late summer, the community gathers for a corn celebration! This annual tradition dates back to 1957 when the Delmonte corporation first held a corn boil for the city in anticipation of the harvest season. In 1977, musicians and food vendors where invited to the party and Corn Fest was born!
The Delmonte Corporation still donates more than 30,000 ears of freshly harvested corn for the celebration. Then, a steam engine is used to boil the water and the corn is cooked in stainless steel vats. An army of volunteers are waiting to welcome festival goers with this golden goodness. The corn is free for the taking until it runs out.
While we were in DeKalb, we also did some thrifting. We are happy to report we hit the jackpot with 2 pairs of cross country skis and a set of poles for $4! Now, Adam won't need to borrow skis for our annual ski date. Even better, may we can make our ski date a more frequent event!
