After work, I took a short walk over to Kelly's Pub to meet Kelly for a night on the town. From The Armitage stop on the Brown line, we headed down to the Adam's & Wabash stop and the Art Institute.
The Art Institute was built in 1893 on the rubble of the Great Chicago fire (1871). The lions outside the entrance were a gift from the Field family in 1894. They wear wreaths during the holidays and also Bears helmets and Cubs/Sox caps- if they make it to the post season. A few years ago, it was so cold outside that the Bears helmets cracked around their heads!!
This is Adam mimicking the statue of "Adam." This statue was cast in 1881 to depict a scene from Dante's Inferno for a Museum designed by the artist Rodin that was never built.
For the most part, we spent our time in the European and early American sections of the Institute. You can take pictures in the galleries as long as you don't use a flash! We also saw the original room of the Chicago Stock Exchange. The Institute moved the entire Trading Center room with all it's ornate decor and rebuilt it as an exhibit before the original Exchange was razed.
This 1942 Edward Hopper painting "nighthawks" was quite familiar.
"American Gothic" - Delivered to the Institute in 1930- the year it was created. This portrait, painted in Iowa, depicts a Victorian pair clinging onto "old values." The couple depicted in the painting are actually the artist's sister and his dentist.
After spending a few hours wandering the Institute, we headed south along Michigan Avenue towards the South Loop. Another cool night in Chicago. According to Tom Skilling on WGN, this was the 1st July in history to not record a 90 degree temperature.
The "Willis" tower watches over the city. The ever present icon of the city.

This Metra entrance was a gift to the city of Chicago from France. We saw a travel show that showed many of these Gothic entrances all around Paris. Maybe soon, we will get to see more of these!
This is Jet Magazine headquarters. They have a tribute to Michael Jackson of their magazine covers of Jet & Ebony in their lobby.
For our Date Night dinner, we chose one of our favorites, the Eleven City Diner. It's located @ 11th & Wabash. Although the menu is predominately Jewish, We split a brisket sandwich and cheese fries. Great! (by the way, the beef brisket was incredible!)
